The Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre opened its fantastic facilities back in 1993. The sound system in the ice rink is world class with EAW loudspeakers and Crest amplification. However after more than ten years in the cold and damp environment problems began to occur and Guildford Sound & Light’s engineers were called out to inspect the system which is flown high above the ice rink. After dismantling the speakers it became apparent that the hostile environment had caused all of the woofers to perish. To minimise downtime it was decided that the effected drivers would be replaced for new and in all, twelve RCF L15PS40 15 inch transducers were fitted to the old cabinets. The overhaul also involved some repairs and replacements of the Crest amplifiers and a new DJ mixer with an integrated limiter to prevent any damage to the newly refurbished sound system.
“In hindsight it’s amazing that this system lasted so long being used day and night in such harsh condition, but professional equipment like this can always be counted on. I guess that we can expect a call in 2015 informing us more problems. This time we’ll know where the problems lie.”
