Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 Setup Guide
LAPTOP USERS
- rekordbox for Windows or macOS should be downloaded for free from here - https://rekordbox.com/en/download/
- Serato DJ Lite for Windows or macOS should be downloaded for free from here - https://serato.com/dj/lite/downloads
- The laptop System Requirement are shown on the download pages above. If your laptop doesn't meet these requirements then it is not capable of running the software.
- When you connect the DDJ-FLX4 to your computer running rekordbox it will unlock the Performance Mode and a tutorial will open to walk you through the controller. A new install of rekordbox will automatically start a 30 day free trial of their Core Plan. You can ignore this as the controller will work during the trial and continue to work after that has expired. You do not need to subscribe to one of rekordbox plans to use the DDJ-FLX4.
- The DDJ-FLX4 comes with a USB C lead so you will need one of these smaller sockets on your computer. If you only have the older style USB A sockets on your computer then you will need to purchase a USB A to USB C lead.
- The controller is powered down the USB lead by your computer. The additional USB socket on the controller is reserved for powering the controller when it is being used with an iOS or Android device.
Distorted or crackling sound?
- If the sound is distorting you will likely need to increase the Audio Buffer size. Open up the Preferences in rekordbox and click on the Audio tab. Now move the slider below Buffer Size to the right which will increase the number of samples. Doing this will put less stress on your computer and reduce the likelihood of any distortion.
- In Serato DJ Lite click the cog symbol in the top right corner of the screen to open the preferences. Click on the Audio tab and move the Audio Buffer Size slider to the right. Increasing this buffer will put less stress on your computer and reduce the likelihood of any distortion.
ANDROID & iOS USERS
- Visit the App Store or Google Play Store to download rekordbox for your mobile device.
- You can connect the DDJ-FLX4 either wired or wirelessly. A wireless bluetooth connection is not ideal as the audio will be output from your device instead of the controller.
Wired connection
- To use it wired, connect the USB-C socket with the Laptop/Tablet icon on the back of the DDJ-FLX4 to the charging port of your device. Users of older iOS devices will need a USB-C to Lighting cable to make this connection. Users of newer iOS devices or Android devices can use the USB-C to USB-C lead that was supplied with the DDJ-FLX4.
- You will also need a USB-C power supply to connect to the other socket on the back of the DDJ-FLX4. This will simultaneously power the DDJ-FLX4 and charge your device. iPhone power adaptors are not big enough for this so you will need an iPad, laptop, power bank or other USB-C power supply that can provide at least 3A for it to work.
- Once attached to your device and powered up correctly you can connect your speakers and headphones directly to the DDJ-FLX4 controller.
CONNECTING THE DM-40D SPEAKERS
- The lead to connect speakers is inside the DM-40D box. The red and white connectors plug into the MASTER output on the back of the controller. The small jack end plugs into INPUT 2 on the back of the powered speaker.
- Make sure that the cable connecting the DM-40D speakers has been stripped back to bare wire. The wire needs to make contact with the metal part of the spring loaded terminal in order for the second speaker to work.
- Can't find the 3-pin UK mains lead? It is packed separately to the other leads and is often underneath some plain brown cardboard at the bottom of the box. So check the speaker box again making sure to check right to the bottom of the packaging.
